Ask the Answer Guy – Should I Encrypt My Internal Drive?
How important is it for me to encrypt my system?
If you haven’t already done it, do it. Encrypting your internal drives is essential in fighting off the threats that come after you’ve lost your computer, or had it stolen or compromised by unauthorized users.
The process of encrypting your system depends on the operating system. If you have Ultimate or Enterprise Windows 7 or any version of Windows 8, then you automatically have Windows BitLocker which provides excellent protection. Windows BitLocker is also supported in all versions of Windows 8. If your OS is anything other than the aforementioned, take a look at Symantec Drive Encryptioniii, PGP Whole Disk Encryptioniv, and TrueCryptv (although this can be difficult to configure.)
If you’re still running Windows XP, keep in mind it is no longer supported by Microsoft and an upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 is highly recommended. If you’re unable to upgrade at this time, Symantec Drive Encryption and PGP Whole Disk Encryption will accommodate Windows XP.
OS X Lion has FileVault 2 built in, and Mac OS X computers running version 10.3 or higher are automatically encrypted with the FileVault 1 feature.
When choosing your solution, remember it must encrypt the whole drive in order to prevent your data from being retrieved from a lost or stolen drive. Encrypting or password protecting only some of the files on the drive does not provide complete encryption protection.
Correct configuration of any solution you choose can be complicated. Our experienced and seasoned IT pros at DCG Technical Solutions, Inc. can get you properly encrypted in no time. Visit dcgla.com or all us at 213-261-3998 to discuss your options.
