Ask the Answer Guy – Is DSS necessary if I have RAID?

Dear Brent,

Why do I need DSS if my server has a RAID disk subsystem?"

In the event that a drive fails, Raid lowers risk of downtime and is a “baseline requirement” for servers. But RAID alone provides no protection against accidental or intentional deletion or corruption. For example, software updates have been known to have an update "go bad,” requiring a restore of last known good. We’ve had clients think they were simply “house cleaning” their local drive while inadvertently removing important folders on the server.

Also, if there is a fire, water damage, or theft, you need the Dependable SafeSTOR unit with cloud copy in order to recover everything from the cloud. RAID alone won’t give you that.
